Anastasia Mystery Officially Solved But Doubts Remain

The Romanov Royal Family

On This Date In History: The Romanov Royal Family in Russia met its doom. Czar Nicholas II was put in a bad spot as he was not really trained to be the Czar. He took the throne in 1896 and was pretty aloof; detached from the needs of his subjects. He committed the nation to an ill-advised war war with the Japanese in 1904.  The Russo-Japanese War ended pretty quickly with the Russian fleet annihilated quickly following a naval battle north of Japan.

Execution Took Place in This Cellar

About a decade later Russia, like other European countries, was bound by a series of complicated alliances that took Russia and much of the rest of Europe into World War I with an army that was completely ill-equipped for modern warfare. They had lots of guys but they were more suited for a war in 1814 instead of 1914.   The people had gotten angry in 1905 and forced the Czar to create the Duma, a form of Congress. But he kept on dissolving the Duma whenever it came up with some sort of reforms. The war effort was denying the people basic necessities and Nick’s subjects became even angrier to the point of revolt though Nicholas remained oblivious to the people’s needs and their unrest.  So, in 1917 the Russian Revolution broke out. In July 1918 they captured the royal family and on this date in 1918, the family was lined up for a photograph and then gunned down.  A pit was alleged to have been dug and the bodies tossed in an burned.

Anna 1953, Anastasia 1916

Anna 1953, Anastasia 1916

Rumor was that the whole family was killed except for Anastasia, the young daughter. During the 20th century, several women showed up in Europe and even the United States claiming to be Anastasia. The most convincing of these Anastasias was a woman, Anna Anderson, who moved to the United States and died there in 1984. The gravesite for the family was a state secret during the time of the Soviet Union.  But, with the end of communist rule the secret was revealed.  In 1991, the bodies of the Royal Family were exhumed from their supposed grave near the town of Ekaterinburg only to find that the mystery was not solved.  The grave of the Romanovs only had 5 bodies, not 7;  two were missing.  The missing bodies were that of the young male Romanov, Alexi Nikolaevich and one of his sisters.  It was assumed that the missing girl was Anastasia.   The bones in the grave were examined and  DNA comparisons between Anna Anderson and the Royal Family proved she was not Anastasia.  On July 17, 1998 a funeral was held for the 5 members of the Romanov family that had been found, almost exactly 80 years after they were killed.   In January 2008, scientists in Russia claimed that they a few months before had found the charred remains of two children near Ekaterinburg.  In April 2008, forensic experts claimed that they had confirmed that the remains were that one of  Alelxi and one of his sisters.  In March 2009,  apublished report  verified that all of the Romanov family had been identified and no one had survived the execution.  Case close, right?  Not exactly.

Only the Remains of 5 of the Romanov Family was Initially Found; Why would they kill all 7 and then not bury two children with the rest of the family?

I wonder why the executioners would not put all of the bodies together.  It also seems quite convenient that two sets of charred remains just happen to show up near the grave site.  But, my musings aside, a Stanford University study released in 2004 questions the original assertion that the 5 sets of bones unearthed in 1991 belonged to the Romanov family to begin with.  That would throw everything up in the air, including the claims of Anna Anderson.  When news of the Stanford report hit the press, it caused somewhat of a stir among the scientists who had concluded that the case was closed.  After all, part of the premise was that the investigation was flawed and that called into question the integrity and ability of the original scientists.   It always seems that these conspiracies live on forever.  Whenever a credible person produces evidence for one side of a story, another credible person counters the previous credible evidence.  And then there are always unanswered questions such as why the two children were not buried with the rest or how the rumor of Anastasia’s survival even came up in the first place.  I guess the saddest part of this sort of thing is that some folks spend most of their lives trying to disprove or prove points related to issues that really make little difference.  Beside that, if the absolute truth of Anastasia were to be of total certainty, then the events in 1918 would not be nearly as interesting and perhaps forgotten.  One thing Anna Anderson did do was to keep the memory of the murder of the Romanov family alive for nearly a century.

Rain heaviest in Southern Indiana

Weather Bottom Line:

On Thursday night there were a couple of shortwaves out to the west that were approaching the area.   As they wound down, the also slowed down over the western parts of the viewing area and rained themselves out to the tune of 1-3 inches over places like Crawford and Dubois County.  I had figured that was the rain chance for our area on Friday and, sure enough, by midday you could tell that there was very little in the way of vertical development of the clouds which indicated that there was a suppression going on and that rain chances would be limited.  As I looked at the morning analysis, that was also the front so temperatures and humidity will be limited on Friday, though it still will be pretty warm.  The front doesn’t get far and also more or less washes out to our south over the weekend.  However, it should provide enough instability to give us some isolated or maybe scattered t’storms for the weekend.  Highs will be in the low 90′s with somewhat humid conditions but nothing too extreme.

HOW NOT TO MAKE YOUR LEGAL CASE Clement Vallandigham was a member of Congress from Ohio prior to the Civil War. He was against slavery but also was for the Constitution as he saw it, he with the “states rights” argument made by the South and also agreed that it was A-Okay for any state to secede whenever it wanted. After the war began, he lost his Congressional seat but he kept up his rants. General Ambrose Burnside (of sideburn fame) issued General Order Number 38 which declared an intolerance to the “habit of declaring sympathies for the enemy” with the district of Ohio. Vallandigham in 1863 made a speech claiming that the war was not being fought to save the Union but instead was being fought to “free the black man and enslave the white.” That didn’t sit well with the authorities and he was arrested. The drawing to the left is supposedly of his arrest, though it’s unclear whether or not he was taken into custody in his skivvies. I suspect that is a political statement by the artist. Long johns or not, eventually, President Lincoln had him banished to the Confederacy.

After the war, he returned to Ohio and became a successful lawyer. Obviously, being successful doesn’t require a lot smarts. On This Date in 1871, Vallandigham was preparing a clever defense for a murder suspect, He was planning on showing in open court how the victim could have possibly shot himself with his own gun, accidentally. While he strategized, the hours of his days on earth dwindled. Because on the very next day, old Clement was demonstrating to some colleagues what he was going to do in court the next day. He went to presumably empty pistol from atop a dresser and pressed it to his chest. He discharged the weapon. To his great surprise, he grabbed the wrong gun. See, the other gun on the dresser was the empty one. Vallandigham exclaimed “my God, I’ve shot myself!” and down he went to the floor for the count.

The ploy may have paid off even though the jury didn’t get to see the dramatic demonstration. The suspect was acquitted of the murder charge.

babe ruth

In Baseball People have been suspicious about the big home run totals of the late 1990′s and early 2000′s and there have been revelations of steroid use by sluggers such as Alex Rodriguez, Jason Giambi,  Rafael Palemero and now Manny with his women’s fertility drug.  Barry Bonds total of 73 home runs is 22% more than Babe Ruth’s 60. On this date in 1920, Ruth hit his 30th home run to break his record of 29. He ended up with 54 home runs for the year, breaking his record by 86%!!! Beer and Hot Dogs are suspected as the key to his unfathomable success.

Weather Bottom Line:  Global Warming enthusiasts will have to hide this weekend around here.  We may not get out of the low to mid 70′s and most likely not out of the 70′s at all…in mid/late July. The front that could have brought the ruckus showed itself yesterday afternoon to just move through here today pretty quietly.  Now, on Friday, a second cold front will come down and lower the 850 temps to below 10 for the weekend.  That will translate into very cool nights and very mild afternoons.  The trof is progged to be very deep and maybe make it to the Gulf Coast.  Tis possible there may be a few t’storms on Friday afternoon with the passage of the second front but the real story will be the mild air.  It will begin to modify Monday but temperatures should remain below seasonal averages at least into the middle of next week.

A Date With a Woman That Changed History?

Did Love Change History?

Did Love Change History?

On This Date In History:  Napoleon was exiled to Elba on this date in 1814 but you can look that up for yourself, it’s boring compared to what happened 103 years later on April 11, 1917.  Allen Dulles is known throughout history as head of the CIA and confidant of several US Presidents.  At the age of 24, Dulles was working at the American legation in Switzerland as World War I raged on.  He had been smitten with Helene Herzog since he was 15 years old and he finally got a date with her.  On that day at noon, Dulles received a phone call from a Russian revolutionary who said he had important information to deliver that night.  No one else was in the office so the chore would be left to young Allen Dulles, who had a date that night.  What to do?  Receive an important message or go on the date.  Dulles did what any 24-year-old man would do….he chose the date and told the caller he’d meet with him in the morning.  The man said the next day was too late but the love smitten young man paid him no mind.

Lenin Arrives In Russia April 16 1917

Lenin Arrives In Russia April 16 1917

While Dulles was on his date, Vladimir Lenin boarded a train in Switzerland bound for Sweden where he would then begin a journey that would take him to Russia.  The Russian Revolution had begun.  Russia pulled out the war, abandoning the Allies’ cause.  As it turns out, the important message that Dulles blew off for his date was a secret message for President Woodrow Wilson from Lenin.  Seems Vladimir wanted to give Wilson advanced notice of what he was up to.  We don’t know how the date went, but we do know that President Woodrow Wilson had to find out about the Russian Revolution after the fact with the rest of the world….maybe he read it in the New York Times….but he didn’t hear it from Dulles, who had a date.  It’s hard to say how it would have made a difference but, who knows how things may have been different?

Dulles In Presidential Limo Between JFK and John McCone in 1962 Just After Being Fired

Dulles In Presidential Limo Between JFK and John McCone in 1962 Just After Being Fired

Thirty Six Years later when Dulles took over as CIA Director, he told that story as a lesson for young agents.   But I wonder about the lesson he told.  What? That you can be negligent in providing important information for the President of the United States and still be trusted to be the CIA Director?  I mean, not getting information to the president that one of your allies in a world war is in revolution and is pulling out of the war is pretty big stuff…especially when the reason was a love sick intelligence officer.  But, this may have ended up as a “what goes around comes around” scenario.  See,  he served as CIA chief from 1953 to 1961.  He was ousted by the Kennedy Administration who used him as the scapegoat for the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba.  Now, Dulles was probably the sacrificial lamb as he wasn’t the ultimate decision maker, JFK was but someone needed to be blamed and Dulles was the one chosen to be thrown under the bus.  So maybe he shouldn’t have been canned in 1961 but that may make up for his not being canned in 1917, when a President was blinded by a young man’s love.

4.10.09 Wall Cloud In Madison Co KY submitted to NWS Louisville by Chris and Jason Rawlins

Weather Bottom Line:  We had some storms and couple of warnings and numerous hail reports on Good Friday but, as I had suspected, the roughest stuff was to our South and Southeast.  I was driving to Knoxville and back and got to Knoxville about 3:30 pm just after a tornado had wasted part of Murfeesboro.  As I headed back up I-75, Tornado warnings were issued for two counties just northwest of Knoxville with the storms moving northeast at 45 mph…in other words right across my path on I-75.  On the local radio, the announcer was saying how terrible storms were going across I-75 but another woman comes on and says the storms are falling apart.  I progressed on pondering as I did not want to get on that plateau between Knoxville and the Kentucky border with big ass storms all over the place since there isn’t much of a place to hide up there.  But, as I moved on, the way the rain was falling I could tell that the storms had indeed fallen apart and I was just dealing with rain.  Still was a pain in the neck.

Saturday around here will be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 50′s to near 60.  Probably mid 60′s on Easter Sunday and plenty of sunshine.  As I mentioned previously, the indecies went and flopped back to the point that they support my original outlook from a few days ago regarding the main short coming out and around here on Monday.  So, the SPC went and broadened the area of concern.  Now, we have the same issue as in previous systems.  There is a split decision.  It appears there is consensus that moisture does indeed return early Monday morning so we do have a period of reloading to some degree.  The problem is that the NAM does get more robust in its calculations but just on the verge of thunderstorms with marginal indications of severe potential.  Whereas the GFS once again is going bonkers and advertising a pretty decent event.  Guess here is that we get something similar to what we’ve had lately and that is something in between.  Some severe storms but not a full blown death and destruction event.  However, its late Friday night and we still have several days to go so we’ll see how it shakes out.  However, I do think that we’ll have some noteworthy activity late Monday…the only difference is that now I have some data to support my hypothesis…that last part is your reply, Cruxshadows.
