JFK Assassination; November 22 is a pretty gloomy day in history
November 22, 2009

jfk

On This Date in History: This is a pretty lousy day in history. On November 22, 1963 President John F. Kennedy became the fourth American president to fall to an assassin. The first was Abraham Lincoln in 1865, followed by James A. Garfield in 1881 and then William McKinley in 1901. There are many many websites dedicated to the notion that the president’s murder was a conspiracy.  But, it’s tough to find out about the answers to those theories.  Here is a website dedicated to debunking all of the conspiracy theories.  Just click on the highlighted “fact” in question and then you be the judge.  In any event, let us hope that this list remains at four forever.

NOT the 1st President

NOT the 1st President

The man whom some consider the first President of the United States died on this day in 1783. John Hanson was the first president of the Continental Congress under the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation came into being while he was the President of the Congress in session from 1781 to 1782, during which time General Washington was defeating the British at Yorktown in October 1781. Calling Hanson the first president is pretty nonsensical. He was more like the prime minister. The separate, executive position of president didnt even exist until the Constitution in 1789. General Washington served as the nation’s first president from 1789 to 1797.

Novelist Jack London died on this date in 1916. He was just 40 years old and died of kidney disease derived from unknown origins. One fairly reliable source claims that reports that London was an alcoholic are unfounded. What is telling though about London is that he was an avowed socialist yet, he spent a huge wad of cash on a huge house in California. True socialist. The bourgeoisie gets all of the money and luxury while the peasants and proletariat share the rest. In theory thats not how socialism is supposed to work but in practice that’s usually the result. A small group of elite “haves” preaching hypocrisy to the masses, the “have-nots.”

Mae West died on this date in 1980. I normally don’t do this but I’m linking a page from Wikipedia for you to look at if you like. It’s usually not a reliable source of information but in this case, it will do. If the information is accurate, then you will find just how controversial that she was regarding the content of her career and early problems she caused for those who wanted to keep some moral limits in the entertainment business. Her famous line of “is that a pistol in your pocket or are you just happy to see me” was blurted out by her when she arrived at the LA train station and a policeman was there to escort her. Later, she used the line in a film but somehow the line got assigned to her way before that. She had other lines and a pretty risque reputation. Here is a list of supposed Mae West quotes. She died at age 87 after a series of strokes, but she earlier had hidden her true age. When she appeared with WC Fields in My LIttle Chickadee, she was 47, which was a surprise to me.

Let’s see…what other lousy things happened on this date…in 1972 the first B-52 was shot down in Vietnam and in 1950 there was a terrible collision of commuter trains in New York.

I don’t know about you, but November 22 seems like a day we should all climb in our beds and pull the cover over our heads.

Critical Thickness Lines Mostly Well South By Friday 7AM

Weather Bottom Line:  Some nattering nabobs of negativism said on the tube that Sunday would be cloudy and gloomy but I warned you that it would be a lovely day and it was.  What the hubub was about was a low coming up from the south but it was too far to the south to do much of anything except throw some high clouds our way.   Now, as it moves up to our east, it will be closer to thicken up the clouds somewhat.  I suspect that will generally be the story but the models are tossing out very light rain from time to time for Monday and Tuesday.  Either way, the clouds will probably hold the afternoon highs in the 50′s.  There is a more significant system coming down for the middle part of the week.  I suspect that we will have a period of partly cloudy skies for the first half of Wednesday before the lead short wave comes down and the front moves through.  That will give us a chance for some rain late Wednesday into early Thursday.  There is a secondary short coming in behind the first one that will bring along more energy and a shot of some pretty cold air.  There will probably be a period of clearing after the first round that won’t last long before more clouds roll in.  With the parent low to the northeast up around the Great Lakes, many models are hinting at wrap around snow for Thanksgiving night.  If it does, I don’t see how it will be anything more than a conversation piece.  My hunch is that it is nothing more than a computer driven fantasy but in pragmatic terms, its no big deal either way.  But, if it does happen, it would be the first flakes of the season and that always brings out the media even though such an event in January would bring nothing more than a yawn.  Anyway, plan on a cold Thanksgiving.  Some places may only get to 40 or so for an afternoon high.  The chilldown won’t last for  too long though as we should return to seasonal levels for the weekend.

A Date With a Woman That Changed History?

Did Love Change History?

Did Love Change History?

On This Date In History:  Napoleon was exiled to Elba on this date in 1814 but you can look that up for yourself, it’s boring compared to what happened 103 years later on April 11, 1917.  Allen Dulles is known throughout history as head of the CIA and confidant of several US Presidents.  At the age of 24, Dulles was working at the American legation in Switzerland as World War I raged on.  He had been smitten with Helene Herzog since he was 15 years old and he finally got a date with her.  On that day at noon, Dulles received a phone call from a Russian revolutionary who said he had important information to deliver that night.  No one else was in the office so the chore would be left to young Allen Dulles, who had a date that night.  What to do?  Receive an important message or go on the date.  Dulles did what any 24-year-old man would do….he chose the date and told the caller he’d meet with him in the morning.  The man said the next day was too late but the love smitten young man paid him no mind.

Lenin Arrives In Russia April 16 1917

Lenin Arrives In Russia April 16 1917

While Dulles was on his date, Vladimir Lenin boarded a train in Switzerland bound for Sweden where he would then begin a journey that would take him to Russia.  The Russian Revolution had begun.  Russia pulled out the war, abandoning the Allies’ cause.  As it turns out, the important message that Dulles blew off for his date was a secret message for President Woodrow Wilson from Lenin.  Seems Vladimir wanted to give Wilson advanced notice of what he was up to.  We don’t know how the date went, but we do know that President Woodrow Wilson had to find out about the Russian Revolution after the fact with the rest of the world….maybe he read it in the New York Times….but he didn’t hear it from Dulles, who had a date.  It’s hard to say how it would have made a difference but, who knows how things may have been different?

Dulles In Presidential Limo Between JFK and John McCone in 1962 Just After Being Fired

Dulles In Presidential Limo Between JFK and John McCone in 1962 Just After Being Fired

Thirty Six Years later when Dulles took over as CIA Director, he told that story as a lesson for young agents.   But I wonder about the lesson he told.  What? That you can be negligent in providing important information for the President of the United States and still be trusted to be the CIA Director?  I mean, not getting information to the president that one of your allies in a world war is in revolution and is pulling out of the war is pretty big stuff…especially when the reason was a love sick intelligence officer.  But, this may have ended up as a “what goes around comes around” scenario.  See,  he served as CIA chief from 1953 to 1961.  He was ousted by the Kennedy Administration who used him as the scapegoat for the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba.  Now, Dulles was probably the sacrificial lamb as he wasn’t the ultimate decision maker, JFK was but someone needed to be blamed and Dulles was the one chosen to be thrown under the bus.  So maybe he shouldn’t have been canned in 1961 but that may make up for his not being canned in 1917, when a President was blinded by a young man’s love.

4.10.09 Wall Cloud In Madison Co KY submitted to NWS Louisville by Chris and Jason Rawlins

4.10.09 Wall Cloud In Madison Co KY submitted to NWS Louisville by Chris and Jason Rawlins

Weather Bottom Line:  We had some storms and couple of warnings and numerous hail reports on Good Friday but, as I had suspected, the roughest stuff was to our South and Southeast.  I was driving to Knoxville and back and got to Knoxville about 3:30 pm just after a tornado had wasted part of Murfeesboro.  As I headed back up I-75, Tornado warnings were issued for two counties just northwest of Knoxville with the storms moving northeast at 45 mph…in other words right across my path on I-75.  On the local radio, the announcer was saying how terrible storms were going across I-75 but another woman comes on and says the storms are falling apart.  I progressed on pondering as I did not want to get on that plateau between Knoxville and the Kentucky border with big ass storms all over the place since there isn’t much of a place to hide up there.  But, as I moved on, the way the rain was falling I could tell that the storms had indeed fallen apart and I was just dealing with rain.  Still was a pain in the neck.

Saturday around here will be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 50′s to near 60.  Probably mid 60′s on Easter Sunday and plenty of sunshine.  As I mentioned previously, the indecies went and flopped back to the point that they support my original outlook from a few days ago regarding the main short coming out and around here on Monday.  So, the SPC went and broadened the area of concern.  Now, we have the same issue as in previous systems.  There is a split decision.  It appears there is consensus that moisture does indeed return early Monday morning so we do have a period of reloading to some degree.  The problem is that the NAM does get more robust in its calculations but just on the verge of thunderstorms with marginal indications of severe potential.  Whereas the GFS once again is going bonkers and advertising a pretty decent event.  Guess here is that we get something similar to what we’ve had lately and that is something in between.  Some severe storms but not a full blown death and destruction event.  However, its late Friday night and we still have several days to go so we’ll see how it shakes out.  However, I do think that we’ll have some noteworthy activity late Monday…the only difference is that now I have some data to support my hypothesis…that last part is your reply, Cruxshadows.

the weather channel got bought by nbc by $3.5 billion. nbc has been in the midst of the of its “green week” and to celebrate, they have cut 10% of the jobs at the weather channel, including their “forecast earth” segment, which focuses on global warming. fan favorite dave schwartz also reportedly is out of a job. here are the details from the washington post.
i met dave scwartz a few weeks ago when he was in town for the national weather association conference. he was every bit of a good guy as he seems to be on tv. my guess is that viewers will not be happy. as for forecast earth, i suspect that viewers will be happy to get more weather and less special programs

thought that the animals hadn’t had too many visitors. Sure enough, we were greeted warmly by the burros at the gate as we entered with our bags of carrots. The zebras are funny because there is one bully who stomps his foot, puts his ears back and bares his teeth, demanding a carrot. He also chases away the other guys but Snow White distracted the bad guy while I got carrots to the others. The porcupines have a baby and the three of them like their carrots as did the bunny rabbits and Lady Di, whom I think is a Bactrian Camel because she has two humps. There are lots of baby goats, two of which we saw climbed up on a downed tree limb. Goats in the trees…who’d of thunk it? Anyway, go and visit and support Henry’s Ark, it’s a great experience for the whole family. The animals get lonely in the winter. And this sure seems like winter. As a big fat high comes over us, look for the mercury to fall into the teens overnight. Saturday will have similar temperatures as Friday. While we warm up on Sunday to the low to mid 50′s, that is still a hair below the seasonal averages. The week ahead still is cool but not quite as cold as we’ve seen. Thanksgiving still looks to feature highs in the low 50′s. Rain Sunday night and Monday.
